Overview

Construction workers don't like safety training and they won’t hesitate to tell you that. In order to appeal to this challenging demographic, we needed to create material that was both engaging and functional on aging mobile devices.

Championed simplicity over stand-out design

It was imperative that interactive experiences be as easy and straightforward as possible. When an audience is pre-resistant to training, the last thing they need is further frustration from learning controls. I pushed for simple functionality throughout the design process, advocating for restraint over interesting-but-complex mechanics.

Optimized for low-end mobile devices

I overhauled the 3D art style that increased app performance by 45% and reduced download times by 50%. Interactions with our courses became faster and less frustrating on older, aging phones (which much of our audience had). Not only did speed increase, but the visuals became brighter, easier to see, and overall more visually cohesive.

Scaled yearly course output by 200%

I led a production increase from 2 published titles per year to 6–8 by stepping into a leadership vacuum when a project manager exited — heading up team meetings, managing project tracking, and unblocking the creative pipeline.


Results

Our construction audience scored our courses an average of 4 out of 5 across 30+ published titles. To this day, the course library regularly sell and are frequently selected for bundles on OpenSesame — a platform that only promotes content that’s proven effective. Workers told us our training was some of the most engaging they'd ever experienced.
